Last school year the New Mexico Rail Runner Express adopted a new policy for groups looking to travel on the train. Because the new policy makes it easier for groups to receive a discount, many schools chose to use train as their form of transportation for field trips and outings. The overall experience for groups taking the train has been overwhelmingly positive.
The new policy allows groups of 25 paying people or more to receive a $2.00 discount on their fare. Along with a discount, the group will also receive a package that includes an authentic Certificate of Travel for their group, and identification stickers for each member of the group to wear as their ticket.
School groups that have taken the train say that their students are much more excited to ride the train for their field trip than the bus. On May 2nd, 2013 an exceptional needs group from Jimmy Carter Middle School in Albuquerque enjoyed their first ride ever on the New Mexico Rail Runner. The group traveled to Santa Fe to visit the Roundhouse for a tour. “Our students enjoyed sitting on the top level while they ate their lunches and enjoyed the scenery from the window seats,” said Trish Valdez, special education teacher at JCMS. “The Rail Runner staff was great and made sure we got off at the right stop and when to re-board back to Albuquerque,” said Valdez.
