Lorraine Chavez used to have a pretty quick commute from her home in San Antonio, New Mexico to her office in Socorro. However, when her office was relocated to Downtown Albuquerque, her drive went from about 25 miles to approximately 180 miles round trip daily. Fortunately, by using public transportation and the New Mexico Rail Runner Express, Lorraine has been able to save more than $100 each week on gas alone.
Each work day, Lorraine drives to Socorro, catches the Socorro Shuttle to the Belen Rail Runner Station and then takes the Rail Runner to Downtown Albuquerque. In Albuquerque she catches the ABQ Ride Route 66 bus to her office.
“I’ve been commuting from Socorro to Belen daily and riding the Rail Runner to Downtown Albuquerque for nearly two years. I’ve saved thousands of dollars as well as extended the life of my vehicle,” said Chavez, who estimates that she saves more than $400 each month by taking the Rail Runner.
Not only does she save money by using the Rail Runner and connecting busses, Lorraine also gets some peace of mind from not driving. “Mostly my commute has made for an extremely stress free lifestyle,” she said. When asked what she enjoys most about taking the Rail Runner, Lorraine replied, “the ability to relax before work and unwind after work.” Instead of driving, she spends her time listening to music, reading or visiting with her husband on the phone.
Lorraine has plans to retire at the end of the year. Using money she has saved on her daily commute, she and her husband plan to relocate to Santa Fe to be closer to their adult son. They would also like to take a vacation.
By using the NM Rail Runner Express, you, like Lorraine, can put life – and time – back in your budget!
