Bike Month Events

May is National Bike Month, a celebration of biking as transportation and recreation. Throughout the month there are several bicycle-centric activities, educational opportunities, and events taking place in both Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Continue reading for a list of offerings, as well as bicycle information and resources. And don't forget - you can bring your bike on the New Mexico Rail Runner Express or any Rio Metro bus for free anytime!

Strive Not to Drive Week, May 15-19

Join ABQ RIDE for Strive Not to Drive Week, May 15-19, 2023. Use this time to think about your transportation choices and choose to walk, bike, ride the bus, carpool, or take the train.

Bike to work, the grocery store, your favorite business, your school, your friend’s house, or just wherever. Celebrate biking no matter where you go! Commit to ride to be entered into a free raffle. Visit a pop-up table on Friday, May 19 to pick up free swag and learn about biking in Albuquerque. Learn more and commit to ride at www.bikethruburque.com. The City of Albuquerque is updating its Bikeway and Trail Facilities Plan and is looking for your input. The City features an extensive system of multi-use trails and has greatly expanded its network of on-street bikeways in recent years. However, it has been close to a decade since the City took a comprehensive look at its bicycling infrastructure and the needs of people who bike. 



Visit the project website (www.abqbikeplan.com) to learn more about the project and to get involved:

  • Share your thoughts on general biking priorities in a survey
  • Use an interactive map to identify specific locations where you’d like to see improvements
  • Visit with project team members at a pop-up event as part of Bike to Wherever Day on May 19
  • Attend a public meeting: 
    • May 10 from 12-1 p.m.  (Online only)
    • May 11 from 5:30-7 p.m. – In-person only (Open house from 5:30-6 p.m.; Presentation at 6 p.m.)

Santa Fe Bike Month

Each May, Santa Fe celebrates Bike Month! This year, the offerings include something for everyone: social rides around town, group rides to school, organized trail rides for the dirt fanatics, a bike swap for buyers and sellers, educational opportunities, races, and more! Additionally, numerous local businesses are providing a discount or freebie to patrons who arrive by bicycle.

Bring your bike on the New Mexico Rail Runner Express or any Rio Metro bus for free anytime!

New Mexico Rail Runner Express

Each Rail Runner car has space for up to eight bicycles. There are also bike lockers available for rent at most Rail Runner stations. Bring your bike on board and explore central New Mexico! Visit our bikes on the train webpage to learn about traveling with your bike and how to rent a locker. 

Rio Metro Bus

All Rio Metro buses feature sturdy exterior bike racks attached to the front that can hold two bicycles with wheels 16 inches or larger. Visit our bikes on the bus webpage for information on how to load and unload your bicycle.
