Explore Valencia County: Art, History, Food & Fun

Looking for a unique getaway packed with culture, history, and delicious local eats? Look no further than Valencia County. From historic museums to summer movie nights, there’s something for everyone in this charming region south of Albuquerque.

Just a short walk from the Belen Rail Runner Station, you’ll find a community steeped in railroad history and artistic energy.

  • Belen Harvey House Museum: This beautifully preserved landmark once served rail passengers in the early 1900s. Today, it houses exhibits that showcase Belen’s deep railroad roots and local history.
  • Belen Arts District: Stroll along Becker Avenue to take in creative shops and local galleries. The quaint Chavez Brothers Vineyard tasting room is just around the corner on South Main. The Arts District regularly hosts community events and pop-up shows. 
  • Through the Flower Art Space: Created by renowned artist Judy Chicago, this nonprofit space features exhibitions highlighting women’s achievements and community education. 
  • Pete’s Cafe & Hub City Brewing: Refuel at Pete’s Cafe, a Belen favorite known for its New Mexican comfort food, or grab a cold brew at Hub City Brewing, a welcoming local taproom adjacent from the Rail Runner Station.

Just north of Belen, Los Lunas blends small-town charm with big experiences, perfect for families and history buffs.

  • Los Lunas Museum of Heritage and Arts: Learn about the people and traditions that have shaped the region. Exhibits feature local artists and historical artifacts.
  • Village Events & Starlight Cinema: The Village of Los Lunas Recreation Department hosts a variety of community events throughout the year. Kick back under the stars this summer and take in one of their drive-in movies. Other events to look forward to include the annual 4th of July celebration and festive holiday parade. The Starlight Cinema offers a cool summer escape where guests can enjoy the latest box office hits.
  • Teofilo’s Restaurant: Enjoy a truly unique dining experience and classic New Mexican cuisine in a cozy setting that feels like home.
  • UNM-Valencia Campus: Located just outside the village, this campus offers educational and community programs. This summer, Rio Metro is offering special weekday bus service (Route 209) between the campus and the Los Lunas Rail Runner Station, making it easy for students and staff to get there.

A short distance from Los Lunas, the small village of Tome is full of heart and history.

  • Tome Hill: Popular with hikers and pilgrims alike, Tome Hill offers panoramic views and a peaceful place for reflection. Each spring, it becomes the site of a major religious pilgrimage.
  • Tome Art Gallery: This locally run gallery features handmade artwork, crafts, and gifts from New Mexico artists. It’s a wonderful stop for unique souvenirs and inspiration.

Getting There is Half the Fun
When planning your trip, the New Mexico Rail Runner Express makes it easy and affordable to explore much of Valencia County. With stops in Belen and Los Lunas, you can hop on board and leave traffic behind.

Need to get around once you arrive? Rio Metro provides weekday bus service:

  • Rail Runner Train and Rio Metro Bus at the Los Lunas StationRoute 208 provides three northbound and three southbound trips morning/midday between Valencia County, the Pueblo of Isleta, and Downtown Albuquerque. 
  • Route 209 operates between the Los Lunas Rail Runner Station and UNM-Valencia Campus for the summer season.
  •  Route 210 offers service to destinations like shopping centers, schools, and civic buildings.
  • Dial-a-Ride service is available for personalized pickups and drop-offs (must make a reservation 24 hours in advance).
