7 Tips for Riding the Rail Runner with Kids

Posted on February 18, 2026 at 12:00 AM by Riann Martinez

Kids and Grandparents Riding the Rail Runner Train TogetherWith spring break and warmer weather on the way, there’s no better time to hop aboard the New Mexico Rail Runner Express and explore central New Mexico as a family. Whether you’re planning a museum day in Santa Fe, a lunch adventure in Albuquerque, or riding the rails “just because,” we’ve got you covered.

Here are seven smart (and sanity-saving) tips for riding with kids:

1. Plan Ahead

A little prep goes a long way—especially when traveling with little ones.

  • Check our station map to choose your departure and arrival stations.
  • View the train schedule to plan both your departure and return times.
  • If you’re visiting a museum, zoo, or special event, double-check their hours before you go.

Pro tip: Let the kids help pick the destination. It builds excitement before you even leave home!Child Reading a Book on the Rail Runner Train

2. Arrive at the Station Early

We recommend arriving 10–15 minutes before departure. This gives you time to:

  • Park and walk to the platform
  • Get everyone settled
  • Snap a few “train day!” photos

Arriving early also gives kids time to safely watch the train arrive, which is half the fun.

3. Bring Snacks & Entertainment

We recommend:

  • Easy-to-pack snacks
  • Coloring books or small activity kits
  • Card games
  • Tablets or devices (bonus: there are electrical outlets on the mezzanine and upper levels!)

Food and drinks are welcome onboard (just no alcohol). The middle and upper levels even have tables—perfect for snack breaks or game time.

4. Kids Ride Free

One of the best parts? Kids 9 and under always ride free!

Youth ages 10–17 receive discounted fares, and there are also discounts for students with a valid ID and seniors (hello, grandparents!).

5. Strollers Welcome

Strollers are welcome onboard at no extra cost.

  • Please don’t block walkways or seating access.
  • Lightweight umbrella-style strollers are especially convenient since they fold easily and fit in overhead racks.

6. Bathrooms Onboard

You’ll also find:

  • A drinking fountain near the restroom
  • Trash cans on the middle levels near the stairs

7. Safety First

Safety is always our top priority.

  • Hold hands with small children and always stand behind the yellow line at rail stations and platforms.
  • Use handrails in stairwells and hold onto seat back handles when walking through the aisles on a moving train.

Pro tip: A quick safety chat before boarding helps everyone feel confident and ready for adventure.
